Badge of honor

Life gets busy. I haven't taken the opportunity to put anything on this page for about two months. It's not that interesting things haven't happened to me, they've just happened frequently enough to keep more focused on experiencing them, rather than reminiscing about them. Sorry.......

Since summer is a dead time for sports, everyone at espn.com thinks that we need to be smothered with football coverage for a couple months before the season even starts. Unfortunately, to many people, there are only two sports seasons. There is A) the five months during which football is played, and B) the seven months in which football is not played. Because so many people worship at the altar of everything football, my never-ending pigskin nightmare makes life almost insufferable.

Well, not really. But you get what I'm saying.

However, sometimes, these dopes actually write something interesting. Like this piece, composed by Graham Watson from ESPN.com, who decided to select the most hated college football program from each conference. Guess who got picked as "most hated" from the Mountain West Conference. Surprise, surprise, it was my BYU Cougars.

A local sports talk radio station picked up this story and started asking the audience whether or not BYU actually is the most hated and why. The station is the official home of the Utah Utes, and EVERY SINGLE CALLER indicated that yes, BYU is the most hated team in the conference for each of the following reasons (and others I cannot remember)
  1. Dorky fans
  2. Arrogant fans
  3. Arrogant players
  4. Ignorant fans
  5. Whiny fans
  6. "Holier than thou" fans
  7. Cheap players
Not surprisingly, very few Utah fans that called into this show identified the real reason BYU is the most hated.

8. Success and winning

But regardless of the reason why we're hated, the fact is that we are. The final question is how we, as fans, should take this news. Should we be angry? Absolutely not. We should be proud of this label. Does anyone hate the Marlins? Does anyone really hate the Royals? Of course not, because they're not relevant. Nobody hates a nobody.

This news made me prouder than ever to be a Cougar. Maybe I really am excited for football....
